INFORMATION EXCHANGE: If you want to send a public message to all IRBL managers, you can either send a group Internet email addressed to all IRBL managers (using the email name list that I send you to notify you that a newsletter is ready to IRBL # 543 11-17-97 3 download) or post a public message on the IRBL BBS. If you send a group email, I will post it on the IRBL BBS. If you post in on the IRBL BBS, I will distribute it as a group Internet email. Does anyone have any better ideas? Other possibilities are using an Internet mailing list that you can subscribe and post to or an Internet message board. Since we have a small enough group, I think my above detailed plan will probably be good enough. ...................................... 1997 Post-Season Series Status: Participants: NL West: DODGERS Massimo Ortensi NL Central: PIRATES Ricky Diaz NL East: PHILLIES John Parker NL Wild-Card:CUBS (none) AL West: MARINERS Derrick Jensen AL Central: ROYALS Tom Dixon, Jr. AL East: TIGERS George Widenor AL Wild-Card:ATHLETICSBill Koens 1997 POST SEASON SCHEDULE: ------------------------- Legend: CS: Championship Series WS: World Series TUE: CS G1 - PHI @ PIR, TIG @ ROY WED: CS G2 - PHI @ PIR, TIG @ ROY THU: off day FRI: CS G3 - PIR @ PHI, ROY @ TIG SAT: CS G4 - PIR @ PHI, ROY @ TIG SUN: CS G5*- PIR @ PHI, ROY @ TIG MON: off day TUE: CS G6*- PHI @ PIR, TIG @ ROY WED: CS G7*- PHI @ PIR, TIG @ ROY THU: off day FRI: off day SAT: WS G1 - NL @ AL SUN: WS G2 - NL @ AL MON: off day TUE: WS G3 - AL @ NL WED: WS G4 - AL @ NL THU: WS G5*- AL @ NL FRI: off day SAT: WS G6*- NL @ AL SUN: WS G7*- NL @ AL *: if necessary Post-Season Results: IRBL # 543 11-17-97 4 The PIRATES defeated the DODGERS, 3 games to 2, to advance to the NL Championship Series. This will not apply to LF, CF and RF positions (i.e., an OF could start in each position he has started at least one game). PROPOSAL # 2: Modify the PUP rule so that the AB and IP overages for all players on your will be added together for a grand total and then a PUP will be given for every 10 or fraction of 10 (i.e., 8 PUP's if the total is 74). Please note: The above proposal was submitted by Frank Hopkins (RED SOX), not Jeff Nicholson (REDS) (there was a typo error in the last newsletter). Please refer to George's comments in the IRBL BBS messages section later on in this newsletter where he gives his reasons for the change. POST-SEASON PITCHER USAGE PROPOSAL: Modify IRBL Rule # 20G3 to read: A pitcher who had <50 actual IP (do not use IRBL statistics) is limited to 2 GP in each post-season series. The proposal will pass if 2/3's of all votes received by the deadline are "FOR" the proposal. The deadline for submitting your vote is Dec. 8th. ...................................... IRBL rule 20G3 states that if a pitcher has less than 50 actual IP, he can pitch in only 1 post-season series game. I do not believe this is a realistic way to limit some pitchers. For example, Paul Assenmacher has 46. 1 actual IP, but he pitched in 63 actual games for the Indians, or 38.9% of thier games. He is a situational LHP, brought in for 1 or 2 batters in a key situation. I have used him this way all year, and he has helped me win games. By using IP to limit appearances, I can only use him 1 time in a seven game series! If you follow real baseball at all, you KNOW this is not how Assenmacher is supposed to be used in the postseason! I propose that we change the rule to read "If a pitcher has <50 IP (Do not use IRBL statistics), he is limited to 2 IP per post season series." Since fewer actual IP actually limits IP and not appearances, you still have to be careful about usage, but you could pitch a situational pitcher the way they were meant to be pitched: 1 or 2 batters per game. The first proposal was voted down and yet I keep seeing it come up? I vote against proposal #1, leave the player positions allowances as they are. I vote for propsalosal #2 solid thinking by Nicholson,I vote for proposal #3 (conditional) I am somewhat miffed at this problem because this could have been avoided by watching your team closer after aug 27. I do not however feel you should be penalized by the computer managers poor selection. Msg: 9 (Public, sent 10/18/97 at 23:44) From: DON TOBIN To: ALL MANAGERS Subj: TRADING POST The Cardinals have an excess of middle infielders (Bret Boone, Womack, Sanchez, Loretta, Graffanino, and Lemke) and are looking for help inthe OF and pitching (aren't we all?). However, youth and draft picks are always appreciated, since my team is not very good right now, except for a couple of studs. If you want one of the studs, make me offer I can't refuse! I'm willing to do major dealing this year to restructure my team and make me the IRBL Champ again. Just because a real life manager played a guy at SS one game, probably when he'd run out of other options, does not mean that player should play 150 games there.
